Flooding, Downed Tree, Obstacles Caused So. Bay Commuter Turmoil

CHP reported Caltrans was called in when up to 5 inches of water made travel treacherous on I-280 at DeAnza Blvd., among other problems.

CUPERTINO, CA -- The storm wreaked havoc on the afternoon commute in the South Bay, with a downed tree in Sunnyvale on the northbound side of State Route 85 at W. Fremont Avenue where the off ramp was blocked but is now clear.

Flooding also became a problem with stormy conditions creating a lake on the northbound side of Interstate 280 south of N. DeAnza Boulevard. There was also an obstruction reported in that area on route 85.

The California Highway Patrol called in the California Department of Transportation to handle the rising water that collected in the right and center lanes.

Motorists experienced an unprecedented number of delays all over the South Bay.

Farther south, a crash was on I-280 connection on State Route 17 on the northbound side. There was also an obstruction seen at the southbound exit at the Foothill Expressway in Los Altos blocking a lane.

Providing more I-280 headaches in that area, a crash was reported on the northbound side at El Monte Road where the ramp was blocked.

Closer to Campbell, another crash on southbound SR-17 was blocking lanes at the East Hamilton Avenue exit.

Further problems existed where an obstruction was found on SR-85.

Another was located on the eastbound side of State Route 237 west of the Lawrence Expressway in Sunnyvale.

All forementioned incidents have cleared.
