SAN JOSE, CA - The Santa Clara Board of Supervisors heard an update on the county's Heading Home campaign on Tuesday, which aims to house unsheltered families and veterans.

The Heading Home campaign has a goal of housing 1,200 homeless families by October, a spokesperson for the county said. The county says that 150 families have been given permanent housing over a three-month period ending in January of this year.

The Santa Clara Office of Supportive Housing estimates that an average of 54 families seek housing assistance for the first time each month.

The office also said that 278 homeless veterans were placed in permanent housing during the one-year period ending in September of 2021. There are currently 261 new apartments for veterans in development, the county said, including 49 units that will be open this year. Funding for this project comes from Measure A which was passed in 2016.

The county and its partners have also increased temporary night shelter for families by 94 units, a spokesperson for Supervisor Cindy Chavez said. Families are placed within three days of seeking assistance, the spokesperson said.
