Wanted Man Escapes Police After a Struggle in Nearby Sunnyvale

BREAKING: Officers tried to detain the suspect, but he refused to exit his vehicle and drove off, striking an officer.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA -- A man with warrants out for his arrest is on the loose after he assaulted a Santa Clara police officer in his vehicle the morning of Jan. 26 in Sunnyvale, police said.

At 12:58 a.m. today, an officer stopped a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the 24-Hour Fitness located at 1211 E. Arques Ave. in Sunnyvale.

The officer checked the driver's ID card and discovered he had multiple misdemeanor warrants out for his arrest, totaling $25,000, Santa Clara police Lt. Dan Moreno said.

According to Moreno, the officers tried to detain the suspect, but he refused to exit the vehicle. An officer grabbed the suspect and attempted to remove him from the vehicle, but he began driving off, and one officer was struck by the vehicle's door.

A second officer dodged the vehicle to avoid getting hit, Moreno said.

The suspect is at large and was described as a white man in his 30s driving a silver sedan. His name and city of residence have not yet been released.

The officers were unharmed in the incident, Moreno said.
