NorCal Shark Attack Victim ID'd Wearing 'Shark Band' On Ankle: Report

The electromagnetic device was supposed to ward off the shark that killed her.

MONTEREY, CA — When shark-attack victim Erica Fox was found along the Davenport shoreline, her "shark band" was still attached to ankle, the East Bay Times reported.

The band she was wearing was reportedly meant to ward off sharks with a magnetic technology that is supposed to overwhelm their electroreceptors.

Fox, 55, was discovered nearly a week or two after people reported seeing a possible shark before she went missing. Her body was recovered around 2 p.m. Saturday from the ocean, south of Davenport Beach, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday, her husband, joined by dozens of members of the Kelp Krawlers swim club and friends, walked in a quiet procession along the bluffs at Lovers Point, retracing the final mile of her swim.

“She didn’t want to live in fear,” her husband, Jean-Francois Vanreusel, told the East Bay Times. “She lived her life fully.”

In the days following the attack, Vanreusel had returned daily to the Pacific Grove promontory overlooking the ocean, gathering with friends and holding vigil as he searched for any sign of his 55-year-old wife.

On Saturday, Vanreusel received a call from law enforcement confirming that a body found just beyond the northern end of Monterey Bay was his wife.

Fox had been swimming with a group near Lovers Point when a witness reported a large splash, causing the woman's swimming group to return to shore. When they arrived on land, they discovered Fox was missing.

The incident led to beach closures last week in Pacific Grove and Monterey.
