This letter was sent out on 2/15 to residents near [a closed bike path west of Lake Boulevard]. It would be great if all interested parties reading this also attend the meeting. Details are included below. Feel free to forward it to others and call me if you have questions at 530-757-5686. Thanks!

Dear Resident:

Due to unsafe conditions, the City of Davis has closed the bicycle path on the west side of Lake Boulevard (between Marina Circle and the Stonegate Country Club entrance) because of upheavals in the asphalt caused by the roots of nearby stone pine trees. The city is requesting neighborhood input about how this potentially hazardous situation can be remedied.

On Monday, February 27, at 7:00 pm, the city will hold a public meeting to gather input from interested citizens regarding the bike path and the stone pine trees. The location for the public meeting is the Stonegate Country Club main meeting room at 919 Lake Boulevard.

Public Works Department staff will present several remedial plans along with the pros and cons of each option. Each proposal will consider: the city’s responsibility for the public’s safety, servicing the urban forest and maintaining a complete and accessible network of bicycle and pedestrian paths in Davis.

After the short presentation by city staff, there will be a question and answer period during which attendees can comment on the various options or suggest alternatives. After the structured presentation and question period, city staff will remain to answer additional questions from attendees. Neighbors who are not able to attend the beginning of the 7:00 pm meeting can drop in and review the displayed path options and submit verbal or written comments on provided forms. City staff will be available at Stonegate until 8:30 pm that evening.

Input from citizens regarding the future of the path and trees will be forwarded to the Davis City Council. City staff will recommend that the Council review the proposed options and costs and then decide which remedial action will be undertaken by the city. The date of when the city council will discuss the Stonegate path and trees will be announced. Citizens of course are welcome to attend all city council meetings to provide public input.

For questions or comments regarding the Stonegate path and tree options or the outreach process, please contact me at (530) 757-5686 or email MMitchell@cityofdavis.org.
