Blog: Baby-Friendly

I read a cool article about the Sutter Davis birthing center in the Davis Enterprise this weekend.

Our future baby is currently the size of an apple. My wife, Bianca, is almost four months pregnant and now sports her very own baby bump.

At our most recent appointment at Sutter Davis last week, we signed on to a prenatal program that will have us attending group meetings during the rest of the pregnancy rather than individual checkups. It was a new concept to me, but then again, all of these concepts are kind of new.

I was scanning Facebook on my phone over the weekend when I saw an article called “Sutter Davis births Centering Pregnancy program,” posted by The Davis Enterprise. It wasn’t until I started reading it that I realized this was the program Bianca had just signed on for. It seems really cool:

“They are seen individually in early pregnancy for an intake visit — history and physical — and then join the groups. All of their physical assessments — blood pressure, weight, belly check, fetal heart tones — are done one-on-one in the group space and then we meet for the education, support, socialization component all together.”

Groups meet in a conference room at Sutter Davis. While one expectant mother is having her vitals checked, the others are seated in a circle getting to know each other. Once all mothers have had their check-ups, the midwife for the group leads them through discussions and answers questions.

Having read the article, I’m really looking forward to these gatherings. I recommend checking out the full article in the Enterprise.

I look forward to checking out the program for myself in a few weeks. I'm sure Bianca and I will both learn a lot.
