City Of Davis Turns 100, Prepares For Centennial Celebration

DAVIS, CA -- The City of Davis is celebrating a BIG birthday. The original town of Davisville was comprised of the first two blocks of what is now G Street after the railroad came to town in 1868. The City was officially incorporated on March 28, 1917, which means we are turning 100 this year.

To honor our first residents and all those who came after, we are planning a year-long party to celebrate the City’s past, present and future. The annual City Fourth of July 4th Celebration will serve as the City’s official birthday party, however many other events are planned. Do you know a person or business that will be 100 years old or older in 2017? If so, please let us know. We want to celebrate them!

As part of our Centennial Celebration, the City is designating the southeast corner of 2nd and G Streets as “Centennial Plaza.” The walk from the train station to the intersection will be updated with new landscaping, hardscape, art work, interpretive historical signage, a time capsule and a public plaza.

The City has established a Centennial website, Davis100.cityofdavis.org, to share the City’s history and provide news and updates on Centennial events, volunteer and sponsor opportunities. The City is working on a historical timeline that will display highlights from the past 100 years. The history and the growth of Davis can best be told through past and current residents.
