📰 News we're reading

• Record Returns: 2,100 salmon spawned in Putah Creek (dailydemocrat.com) — Right in Davis’ backyard, a record 2,100 Chinook salmon returned to spawn in Putah Creek this fall, thanks in part to long-term UC Davis research and regional water management. Scientists, students, and local agencies credit habitat restoration, functional water flows, and fishery closures for the surge. The success could boost both Putah Creek’s wild salmon and California’s struggling salmon populations.

• New Monoclonal Antibody Shows Promise for Rare Liver Disease (indianewengland.com) — UC Davis researchers are helping lead promising new treatment research for primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare liver disease with no approved drug therapy. Their Phase 2 trial of the monoclonal antibody nebokitug found it safe and potentially beneficial, especially for patients with more advanced liver scarring. While more studies are needed, the work highlights Davis’ role in cutting-edge liver disease care.

• Bankruptcy lawyers allege Bay Area real estate firm transferred millions of dollars to co-founder's mother-in-law (mercurynews.com) — A major Bay Area real estate bankruptcy case now touches Davis through Monley Hamlin Construction, a local general contractor named in a subpoena seeking records tied to an alleged long-running investment scheme. Creditors for more than 600 investors are probing millions transferred to a co‑founder’s mother‑in‑law and several related entities as they try to recover money from a once‑large California property empire.
