📰 News we're reading

1. Second person arraigned in Davis Picnic Day shooting — is there another suspect? (sacbee.com) — A second suspect has now been arraigned in the Picnic Day shooting at Davis’ Community Park that wounded three people and sent crowds running last April. Nineteen-year-old Stephon Wayne Stroman of Sacramento pleaded not guilty to a firearm charge, while earlier arrestee Joseph Allen Davis remains jailed on related federal and state gun counts as prosecutors hint another co-defendant may still face arraignment.

2. Local nonprofit to honor fallen first responders, host January fundraiser (davisvanguard.org) — A regional nonprofit that once aided the family of fallen Davis Police Officer Natalie Corona is inviting locals to a January 24, 2026 fundraiser in Woodland. The 100 Club of Solano and Yolo Counties will share how it supports first responders’ families, award scholarships, and present a donation to a Travis Air Force Base charity, while the Davis Vanguard also seeks reader support.

3. The History of the UC Davis's Brewing Program (beerinfo.com) — UC Davis’s long-running brewing program has quietly shaped both industrial beer production and the modern craft beer movement, all from right here in Davis. This history traces how industry partnerships, pioneering professors, and early homebrewing and extension courses turned a small 1950s pilot brewery in Cruess Hall into a nationally influential center for fermentation science.

4. This Neck Surgery Is Changing Equine Neurology and UC Davis Is One of the Few Places Offering It (myvetcandy.com) — UC Davis veterinarians in Davis are now offering a highly specialized equine neck surgery, foraminotomy, that only about a dozen vets nationwide perform. Powered by a new large-bore CT scanner and a growing expert surgical team, the service gives horse owners across the region a new option for treating difficult neck-related pain and neurologic issues.

5. Nevada Baseball reveals 2026 schedule with home series and new ticket options (ktvn.com) — Nevada baseball will visit UC Davis for a three-game road series in late February 2026, then host the Aggies in Reno on April 7. The Wolf Pack’s newly released schedule, under first-year coach Jordan Getzelman, includes several California opponents and a full slate of Mountain West matchups as they defend their 2025 regular-season title.
