Vanguard Identifies Second Suspended UCD Officer

The Davis Vanguard has confirmed the identity of the second officer who was suspended after the .

Authorities and police union representatives wanted the officer’s identity to be kept private in part because of the physical  after images of him went viral and he became the . 

The Vanguard notes that the image above was actually posted on DavisWiki some time ago. The wiki caption reads: “This photo clearly shows the second officer as being an ‘A. Lee. There is an Alexander P. Lee who works for the UCDPD as a ‘security guard’ but that might not be a sworn position so it might not be the same person.”

The Vanguard confirmed that this is indeed the officer. 

It’s hard to argue with the Vanguard’s decision to make the officer’s name public considering the fact that this information has existed on the wiki for some time. But the first set of comments on the Vanguard story ask an interesting question: “So will the Vanguard accept responsibility if Mr. Lee is now subjected to threats or bodily harm?”

Several others defend the decision to release the name and commend the Vanguard's reporting, as you can see here. 

An ACLU staff attorney is quoted in the story as saying that “the distance in time from the initial incident would mitigate such a direct and heated environment as Lt. Pike faced.”
