Where Will You Watch the Solar Eclipse Today?

The eclipse starts around 5:16 p.m. Peak viewing time is 6:33 p.m. Don't risk eye damage: Never look straight at the sun.

With a big event like the annular solar eclipse coming up Sunday, we'd like to know where you'll be going to view the event. The full eclipse won't be visible in Sacramento or the San Francisco Bay Area, but you will be able to see it partially.

Never look at the sun or a solar eclipse with the naked eye or with any optical device, such as binoculars or a telescope - this will cause permanent damage to your eyes and even blindness. Only telescopes with special filters and proper placement of filters can be used to view the sun. 

  • Special eclipse glasses can be used to view the eclipse. The UC Davis Geology Club is selling them for $2.00. To purchase a pair contact Kevin via email at kmdelano@ucdavis.edu. 
  • Make a pinhole viewer. Instructions on how the make and use a pinhole viewer can be found here and here

The Discovery Museum Science & Space Center (3615 Auburn Blvd, Sacramento 95821) will have an eclipse party, 5:30 - 7:30 pm. The evening includes a program explaining eclipses and safe viewing techniques (each participant will receive a special eclipse viewer). During the actual eclipse, families are invited to enjoy their own picnic dinners in our nature area. Then there will be a planetarium show featuring the planets and constellations visible as darkness falls. You may register at the Museum or over the phone by calling 916-808-3942.
