📰 News we're reading

1. < Where Kids Play (npr.org) — A UC Davis researcher explains why kids are flocking to online games as a kind of last frontier where they can play and socialize away from adult supervision, and what that means for their mental health. He contrasts exploitative, casino-like game designs with more open-ended worlds like Minecraft, and offers parents a framework for judging which kinds of screen time may actually support kids’ independence and well-being.

2. Bengals' generosity proves costly in 93-83 loss to UC Davis (idahostatejournal.com) — UC Davis men’s basketball put up a season-high 93 points in a road win over Idaho State, with five Aggies scoring in double figures and Connor Sevilla leading with 18. Despite being outrebounded, UC Davis shot 60% from the field and 91% at the line, repeatedly fending off a late Bengals rally to close nonconference play at 6–5.

3. Putah Creek chinook return in record numbers (thereporter.com) — UC Davis researchers helped document a record 2,150 Chinook salmon spawning in nearby Putah Creek this fall, highlighting the impact of long-term restoration work tied closely to the Davis community. The 25-year, $20 million project, including functional water releases from Lake Berryessa and new spawning gravel, could turn the creek into a major natural source of salmon for California’s struggling runs.

4. What do you have planned for January 20? Join us for the next DCRC webinar (hoards.com) — A UC Davis animal science professor will lead a free national Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council webinar on January 20, offering veterinarians and producers cutting-edge insights into FSH and cattle reproduction. Davis-connected readers in animal science or veterinary fields can register now and even earn continuing education credit for attending.
