Baby Girl Safely Surrendered at Southland Hospital
This is the first infant surrendered in the county this month and the 143rd since the Safe Surrender Program's inception.

LOS ANGELES, CA - A newborn girl was safely turned over to a Los Angeles hospital this week under the Safe Surrender Program, a county supervisor announced Friday.
The child was surrendered on Monday, according to the office of Supervisor Don Knabe, the driving force behind getting the county's Safe Surrender Program unanimously enacted in 2001.
It was the first baby surrendered in the Los Angeles County this year and the 143rd since the program's inception, according to Knabe.

"Thanks to this mother's courage, a baby girl now has a second chance at life and the opportunity to grow up in a loving family," Knabe said.
Under the county's Safe Surrender law, a parent or guardian is allowed to surrender an infant who is no more than three days old at a hospital or fire station without repercussions if the baby shows no sign of abuse.
