Find Out Which 3 L.A. County Freeways Construction Projects Start Tonight

Three separate construction projects on the Golden State (5) Freeway will snarl overnight traffic north of Los Angeles starting tonight and throughout the week.

Additionally, the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway will be closed in the Sepulveda Pass late tonight and Tuesday morning.

Caltrans officials say repaving or widening projects will constrict traffic down to one lane in each direction through The Grapevine, at Newhall and across part of the San Fernando Valley.

At all three projects, lanes will begin disappearing behind cones at around 9 p.m., with the most-restrictive closures coming generally between midnight and 4 or 5 a.m.

And despite the early morning hours, major traffic delays can be expected on the key routes.

Near San Fernando, the freeway is undergoing a major reconstruction between Sheldon Street and the 118 Freeway, Caltrans said. All lanes but one in each direction are subject to closure between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. starting tonight.

Detour possibilities include using the 405 Freeway through the San Fernando Valley, but Metro plans to close the northbound 405 in the Sepulveda Pass late Monday night and Tuesday morning.

In the Newhall Pass area, a set of new truck lanes is being added to the 5 Freeway between the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway and Lyons Avenue. All lanes but one in each direction there are subject to closure between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. starting tonight. Drivers can avoid that delay by using the 14 Freeway and San Fernando Road around the constriction.

And in the mountains, a three-year repaving project will mean similar lane closures between Lago Vista and the Kern County line, near Frazier Park. Those temporary lane closures will start at 8 p.m. and last through 6 a.m. That section of the 5 Freeway has no local detour, but traffic can use the 14 Freeway and Route 138 through Lancaster, or routes 14 and 58 via Tehachapi, to give the congestion a wide berth.
