Hike the King-Swett Ranches

Join Solano Land Trust docent and avid birder Jim Walsh on Saturday, March 5 from 9am to 1pm for a rigorous hike through the King-Swett Ranches.  Participants will explore a portion of these nearly 4,000 acres of grassland, serpentine grassland, oak woodland and riparian habitat, owned by Solano Land Trust.

These ranches are only accessible with a trained Solano Land Trust guide, so take advantage of this opportunity to get healthy exercise and see spectacular views. From the ridges of King Ranch, you can see sweeping views of Suisun Marsh and eastern hills, with Mount Diablo rising to the south. From the western edge of Vallejo-Swett Ranch, on a clear day you can see all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge and Mount Tamalpais, across San Francisco and San Pablo Bays.

This is a strenuous hike, requiring the ability to trek about 4 miles off-trail, through high grasses and thistle, on uneven ground, up and down steep hills. These are working ranches, so cattle may be present. Bring water, snacks, and binoculars if you have them. Wear pants and closed-toe shoes, preferably hiking boots. Come prepared for variable weather (bring layered clothes and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain).

Directions:  From Interstate-80 between Vallejo and Fairfield, take the American Canyon/Hiddenbrooke Exit south toward Hiddenbrooke Parkway. Just before entering the Hiddenbrooke development, turn west (right) on McGary Road (frontage road that runs parallel to I-80 E). Meet promptly beside Jim's white "TruGreen" pickup truck at the Park-and-Ride lot at the intersection of McGary Road and Hiddenbrooke Parkway

This year Solano Land Trust celebrates its 25th Anniversary protecting working farms and natural areas in Solano County. It has permanently protected over 20,000 acres of land for the current and future residents of Solano. All scheduled events at Solano Land Trust properties are posted at www.SolanoLandTrust.org.
