DIXON, CA -- There's a new sheriff in town in Dixon. Or to be more accurate, a new police chief.
On Thursday, March 14, the city swore in Robert Thompson as the city's new top cop. Thompson came to the Dixon PD after a law enforcement career that began when he was 13, when he became a police cadet in St. Louis, Missouri.
At 21, he joined the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department where he worked as a police officer for three years. In 1997, he joined the St. Louis County Police Department where he worked for five years. In 2002, Thompson joined the Federal Bureau of Investigations, where he was assigned to the Sacramento area.

His duties later included working as a supervisor special agent in the Fairfield office, and in this capacity he served as a member of the Solano County Law Enforcement Administrators Association, an organization comprised of the Solano County Sheriff and all police chiefs in Solano County.
Through this group and his work in Fairfield, Thompson became involved with the City of Dixon. He was hired for the Dixon PD position in January, a year after the official departure of previous chief, Jon Cox.

Cox was fired in October 2015 after a video surfaced of him moving heavy furniture despite having filed for a worker’s compensation claim for a supposed work-related injury. The Dixon City Council eventually reinstated Cox, but he was put on paid administrative leave and officially retired in January 2016.
