This holiday season, over 20 student Veteran families asked for assistance through the LPC Veterans First Program. The community came through without hesitation as the Veterans First Program received gift cards, checks, and toys for Veterans and their families, bringing tears of joy to many of the student Veterans as they watched their children open gifts in the Veterans First Resource Center.

Las Positas College Veterans First Program was also gifted a new scholarship this season in the amount of $2,500 from the local Association of the United States Army (AUSA), Major General William F. Dean Chapter out of Camp Parks. The AUSA local chapter voted and approved this to be an annual scholarship. The scholarship window will open late January 2022. LPC student Veterans, active duty, reservist/guard, and their family members are encouraged to visit www.laspositascollege.edu/veterans to see this and other various scholarships available to them.

In addition to local community organizations supporting the LPC Veterans First Program, individual community members such as Dr. Pat Wheeler, a longtime Livermore resident and friend of the LPC Veterans First Program, established four annual scholarships totaling $2,000 for LPC student Veterans who are pursuing a career path as first responders including firefighters, EMT, police officers, social workers, and others who serve community members in need.
When asked, Todd Steffan, Las Positas College Veterans First Program Supervisor stated, “I am humbled, our community has been amazing with their support! Even with fundraising events being canceled due to the pandemic, it has not stopped our community from supporting those who served and continue to serve our community. Our Veterans, military members, and their family members.”
Evelyn Andrews, Veterans First Program Specialist has been a big part of the Veterans First Program. She shared, “Working with student veterans and hearing their stories of transition as older returning students, coupled with juggling college homework and being a parent are huge challenges for them. It is extremely rewarding to support our veterans, meet their families, and see their smiles knowing that we have made a difference in their lives at Las Positas College. We are also so grateful for the community support in the Tri-valley and Delta area.”
