DUBLIN, CA — The Dublin City Council will hear an update Tuesday on the progress of its many Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives made since 2020.

According to a staff report, 36 of the 37 action items recommended by the Community Task Force on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion have been completed, including:

  • Expanding community engagement. Social media engagement grew by 53% last year. The city also hosted roundtables for minority-owned businesses.
  • Enhancing language accessibility. Key city communications, including content, signage, and brochures, have been translated to Spanish and Mandarin.
  • Strengthening law enforcement transparency: Dublin Police Services has added publicly available stop-data reporting, which includes information about every traffic stop, the perceived demographic background of the person stopped, and the outcome of the stop. DPS has also implemented a new de-escalation tracking system to monitor and improve interactions between law enforcement and civilians.
  • Crisis response investments: The city secured congressional funding to expand its mental health crisis response team, which now includes a behavioral health specialist for non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Expanding DEI training: DEI-focused training is now included across all departments.

The city is working on implementing its 37th and final item, which is the development of a mobile crisis response team that can handle mental health-related emergency without relying solely on police officers or the Alameda County Community Assessment and Transport Team.

The report comes at a time when the Trump administration has issued several executive orders eliminating DEI offices and funding in federal agencies. Institutions receiving federal grants must certify that they do not use race-conscious hiring or admissions policies.

Meanwhile, California has reaffirmed its support for DEI initiatives. Attorney General Rob Bonta assured institutions that California laws will continue to protect DEI initiatives, and the state has encouraged its agencies and local government to continue diversity efforts.
