Santa Rita Inmate Found Dead In Cell: Sheriff

The incident marks one of two inmate deaths in East Bay jails in the past few days.

DUBLIN, CA — A Santa Rita Jail inmate died in his cell Monday, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's office. This marked one of two inmate deaths in East Bay jails in the past three days.

Abrion William McElmore, an unhoused man seen in San Lorenzo, Hayward, and Castro Valley was arrested in September 2022 on multiple felony charges, including rape, assault, burglary, trespassing, and illegal drugs, according to a news release from the sheriff's department.

On Saturday at around 12:38 p.m., a deputy at Santa Rita found McElmore unresponsive in his cell, and requested assistance. Medical personnel responded and performed life-saving measures, but ACFD pronounced him dead at 1:03 p.m.

The AlamedaCounty Coroner's Bureau informed McElmore's next of kin. The incident and cause of death are under investigation.

On Monday, an unnamed inmate was found dead in his cell at West County Detention Facility in Richmond, according to the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office. The investigation is ongoing.
