New Blog Highlights Modernism in Glassell Park
The site is devoted to improving the image of Glassell Park—via its vibrant modernist architecture.

Here’s some good news for local architecture and history buffs: The “Eagle Rock area,” which bleeds into and tends to include neighboring Glassell Park, has a new blog devoted entirely to modernist architecture.
Titled Glassell Park Modernism, the blog is the brainchild of Andrew Montealegre, a semi-retired Glassell Park resident who has long been involved with land use issues on the Glassell Park Neighborhood Council.
“I’m trying to improve and amplify the image of Glassell Park,” Montealegre says. “For a long time it was known as the home of the Avenues gang—or if something positive gets mentioned it’s placed in Eagle Rock or Mount Washington.”

Adds Montealere: “Now that the backs of the Avenues has been broken, its time to come forth with the modernism concept. Also, I believe it is very unusual to have such a high concentration of modernist and contemporary architecture in one place, plus there are a lot of developable lots in the community that could complement this image.”
Montealegre says he has been gathering photos and thinking about the blog for at least the past year. He began organizing the blog and posting on it in February.

The blog is intended only for modernist and contemporary buildings “because that’s what I see as being unique to the area—kind of what Silver Lake is also known for,” says Montealegre. “If I see a home that is a combination, then I would discuss it in terms of the modern mixed with whatever.”
Besides architecture and history enthusiasts, Montealegre reckons that professionals in the field of development might be interested in his blog. And yes, that does include developers, although Montealegre is picky about which ones he’ll focus on, depending on their projects and their location.
“The developer of 52 new townhomes on Eagle Rock Boulevard asked about being included in the blog and I told him I would consider it,” he says, adding: “Anything that is contemporary or modernist and fosters the image the Glassell Park is the focus of the blog.
