Toddler Mauled By Dog In East Palo Alto: Police

A young child was hospitalized with severe injuries after a dog attack in East Palo Alto on Wednesday evening.

EAST PALO ALTO, CA — A dog attacked and seriously injured a 1-year-old child Wednesday evening in East Palo Alto, and investigators are looking to hear from more witnesses as the investigation continues.

In a news release Thursday, the East Palo Alto Police Department said its officers rushed to the scene on Schembri Lane shortly before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. According to police, the first officers to arrive lept into action to secure the aggressive dog while keeping the young child safe.

Medics from the Menlo Park Fire District and American Medical Response arrived shortly after, providing aid at the scene before rushing the child to a nearby medical facility for more treatment.

Animal control worked with members of the Peninsula Humane Society to evaluate the incident before removing the dog from the home. Officials said the animal would remain with animal control pending further investigation.

"We assure the community that we will work closely with the relevant agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and take appropriate measures necessary to resolve this matter," the police department wrote Thursday. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and their family during this difficult time. The safety and well-being of our community, especially its most vulnerable members, are of utmost importance to us."

Officials said they would continue to keep tabs on the child's condition and urged community members to respect the family's privacy.
