Comment: Appreciation for Aiding Schools

A blog post by Todd Groves on the new math initiative at Portola Middle School elicited a spirited discussion and debate with dozens of comments, including our Comment of the Week.

The topic that draws the most reader interest on El Cerrito Patch is local schools – their problems and what can be done to remedy them. A Jan. 7 blog post in our "Local Voices" section by Todd Groves about the new math initiative at Portola Middle School, "Game Change for WCCUSD Academics," has drawn a sizeable number of reader comments in the ensuing days, including our Comment of the Week from Robert Menzimer:

Great work by the indefatigable Todd Groves and other EC parents who have helped generate this stimulating development on behalf of math education in the district. Todd and his community compatriots were equally vocal, and equally successful, in bringing the WriterCoach Connection program to ECHS last year, where it is thriving again this year, and in the migration of the program to Portola Middle School, starting in a few weeks. Community volunteers, trained as writer coaches, working one on one with El Cerrito students in class on their English writing assignments (coach training going on right now, information at www.writercoachconnection.org): As with the math initiative, community-school partnership at its best.
