The First Resident Whose Name We Know

Who was the first El Cerritan whom history remembers by name?

From the El Cerrito Historical Society

Don Victor Ramon Castro was born March 6, 1820, the 11th of 14 children born to Gabriella and Francisco Castro. His father was a former Spanish soldier at the Presidio in San Francisco who became alcade (mayor) of the San Jose pueblo and was later granted the large tract of land encompassing present-day El Cerrito, Richmond and San Pablo.

Don Victor Castro is believed to have been the first permanent resident of El Cerrito. He was widowed twice and had a number of children by his three wives, although not all of the children survived into adulthood.

His first wife, Luisa Martinez, was the daughter of Don Ignacio Martinez, whose land grant was adjacent to the north end of the Castro land grant.

Don Victor was a highly respected gentleman and was well known for his hospitality. He served on the Board of Supervisors during the early days of Contra Costa County. He named Point Isabel after his daughter Isabella. He died at age 80 May 5, 1900.
