El Cerrito Kids Put Whale Together Again

Humpty Dumpty may not have been put back together, but the 35-foot-long skeleton of a gray whale was being reassembled Monday by students at Fairmont Elementary School in El Cerrito.

The centerpiece of Whale Week at Fairmont is the skeleton of a gray whale found washed up on Pescadero State Beach in June 2011. It now travels to Bay Area schools courtesy of the San Francisco-based Mission Science Workshop.

The whale bones will be available for public to see at Whale Week Community Night on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 6-8 p.m. at the school, located at 724 Kearney St.

REAL WHALE SKELETON TO BE ON DISPLAY AT FAIRMONT ELEMENTARY; EVERYONE INVITED TO FREE COMMUNITY NIGHT

Fairmont Elementary PTA of El Cerrito, Calif., is proud to announce that a 36-foot gray whale skeleton will be on display during Whale Week from Feb. 4-6.

Students and volunteers will help assemble the skeleton, which was salvaged from a juvenile whale that washed up on Pescadero State Beach in June 2011 and travels to various schools through the San Francisco-based Mission Science Workshop. 

During Whale Week, Fairmont teachers and volunteers have planned many activities for students at the school to learn more about science and nature. We expect a true hands-on experience that will enhance students' understanding of the world around them.
On Tuesday, Feb. 5, everyone is invited to visit Fairmont to see the skeleton for the free community night being held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The skeleton will be on display in the multipurpose room, which is accessible through the shared parking lot with the El Cerrito Library and Senior Center off of Stockton Ave. Fairmont is located at the corner of Kearney St. and Stockton Ave.Whale Week is made possible through financial support from the West County Ed Fund, Integrated Analytical Solutions, anonymous community donors, and volunteers from the Fairmont community.
