Gas Leak Prompts Apartment Complex Evacuation in Richmond: Updated

Utility crews are working with Richmond Fire Department to repair a natural gas line leak.

RICHMOND, CA- PG&E crews are working to stop the flow of gas to a service line that was ruptured in Richmond's Iron Triangle neighborhood this afternoon, utility officials said.

The utility was notified at 11:35 a.m. that a third-party contractor struck a 3-inch gas service line in the area of Barrett Avenue and Fifth Street, PG&E spokeswoman Melissa Subbotin said.

The ensuing leak prompted the evacuation of a nearby apartment complex, Richmond Fire Capt. Rico Rincon said.

A hazardous materials team and fire engines responded to the leak, which has not resulted in any reported injuries, Rincon said.

As of 1:45 p.m., Subbotin said utility crews were still working to stop the flow of gas to the ruptured line and then repair it.

Subbotin wished to highlight the importance of calling 811 to pinpoint underground gas lines before any digging is conducted.

ORIGINAL REPORT- A gas leak has prompted the evacuation of a nearby apartment complex in Richmond's Iron Triangle neighborhood this afternoon, a fire captain said.

The leak was reported at about 11:55 a.m. on a 4-inch natural gas main in the area of Barrett Avenue and Fifth Street, Richmond Fire Capt. Rico Rincon said.

A hazardous materials team and a couple of fire engines are at the scene while PG&E crews make repairs on the leak, Rincon said.

The gas leak originated in an alley near an apartment complex, prompting the evacuation of residents from nearby units, he said.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the leak, according to Rincon.
