Have You Been Affected by Albany's Crackdown on Out-of-District Transfer Students? Let Us Know

In an attempt to attending Albany schools without a permit, the declared an of March 31 for families to come forward with their real addresses.

For the dozens of families who came forward, students will be allowed to remain in the district for the remainder of the school year, then placed at the bottom of the waiting list.

The district proposed that unapproved transfer students who were not declared by the March 31 deadline would be removed as soon as possible, and not allowed to complete the school year.

We in March, and at school board meetings from board members and district staff. Board members called for a strong stance on the issue. Staff hired to investigate potentially unapproved out-of-district students noted that students without proper permits are "taking the spots of the people who are trying to play by the rules."

The debate in the community has spanned a range of opinions, from the idea that transfer students by diversifying the student body and the classes, to the concern that out-of-district families are not paying their fair share for an Albany education. Some questioned whether or not Albany schools are becoming overcrowded because of the influx.
