Major BART Delays On Pittsburg-Bay Point Line Caused By Car Crash: Updated

BART reported major delays on the Pittsburg-Bay Point line due to an obstruction between Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek Thursday morning.

PLEASANT HILL, CA- Regular BART service resumed Thursday morning after a chase by Walnut Creek police led to a car crashing into a fence near the train tracks, causing major delays, a BART spokesman said.

The problem was initially reported at 7:49 a.m. as an obstruction on the tracks between the Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek stations, BART spokesman Jim Allison said. BART officials learned that Walnut Creek police were pursuing a suspect who crashed his car into a fence along the trackway near Walden and Jones roads, pushing the fence to within about three feet of the tracks, Allison said.

Trains had to single-track through the area while crews removed the vehicle, according to Allison.

He said the car was removed and service began again in both directions as of about 8:40 a.m. Certain eastbound trains on the Pittsburg-Bay Point line that only run during commute hours had to turn around at the Lafayette station as a result of the incident, he said.

No other information about the chase or suspect was immediately available from BART or Walnut Creek police.
