New Jersey Police Veteran Named Contra Costa College Emergency Services Education Director

The East Coast police veteran and educator was selected to helm police, safety, and emergency services at the county community college.

EAST BAY, CA- An East Coast police veteran and educator was selected to helm police, safety, and emergency services at Contra Costa County two-year schools, the community college district announced Monday.

Edward Carney was chosen by the Contra Costa Community College District as the director of these key services for three community colleges in the county, district officials said. Carney spent 25 years with a police department in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, but has experience as an educator as well, district officials said.

He taught subjects such as terrorism at the community college level. Most recently, he worked as executive director of public safety and facilities with Camden County College in New Jersey.

"His extensive background in police training, education and public safety is a wonderful combination of skills and experience that will ensure our campuses remain safe environments for our students, staff and surrounding communities," Helen Benjamin, a chancellor for the district, said in a statement.

The Martinez-based Contra Costa Community College District encompasses Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill and Los Medanos College in Pittsburg.
