State Puts Quake Zone Maps Online

Now you can easily find out online if your house is in an earthquake zone.

If you've ever wondered where the hidden seismic timebomb in El Cerrito and Kensington's backyard is located, you can now ask your computer to show you.

The California Geological Survey has put its earthquake zone maps online for the first time, according to the Associated Press.

You just go to the Geological Survey's earthquake zone mapping page and type in your address. Then you download the map. You'll see that our hometown fault — a segment of the Hayward Fault — is marked by lines with question marks, meaning that geologists aren't sure where it is exactly.

But the state has nevertheless established the quake zone boundaries and published them in the Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zone Maps. The state's 547 maps were previously available only on paper or CDs, according to the AP. The state agency announced the online availability Thursday.
