3 Apply for Empty Kensington Board Seat
Three people signed up by the Thursday deadline to apply for the vacant seat on Kensington's governing board. The board will decide whom to pick. The seat was vacated Dec. 13 when board member Mari Metcalf suddenly resigned.

Three people tossed their hats into the ring for the vacant seat on Kensington's governing board by the deadline Thursday.
The five-member board of the Kensington Police Protection and Community Services District (KPPCSD) experienced a sudden vacancy on Dec. 13 when board member Mari Metcalf suddenly resigned in the middle of her four-year term.
The remaining members of the board opted to appoint the replacement themselves, instead of the expensive option of holding a special election, and invited interested Kensington residents to submit application letters by Thursday.

The three who applied are Becky Stephens, Len Welsh and Kim Zvik, according to Greg Harman, who serves as the district's general manager and as Kensington's police chief.
Board President Tony Lloyd welcomed the three candidates.

"They are all solid citizens and should make good board members," he told Patch.
Zvik, an IT consultant and Kensington Hilltop Elementary School parent, was one of five candidates who vied for the two open seats on the Kensington board in the November election. Those two seats were won by incumbent Chuck Toombs and newcomer Patricia Gillette.
The board will hold an open public meeting on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Kensington Community Center, Lloyd said, adding that the board hopes to be able to make the appointment that evening.
The district previously announced that the board will make its selection no later than Feb. 11.
