UPDATED: City Council to Hear First Friday Plan

Old Town Foundation wants to close down Elk Grove Blvd for monthly street fair.

The Elk Grove Citizen is reporting that the plan set to go before city council members in March would change 'First Fridays' to 'Second Saturdays,' in order to avoid disrupting evening commutes.

The Elk Grove City Council will have to approve plans to close down Elk Grove Blvd to cars for , possibly delaying the return of the monthly street festival until May, city and Old Town Elk Grove Foundation representatives told Elk Grove Patch.

Council members are tentatively scheduled to discuss the issue at their March 14 meeting.

The arose after insurance liability issues forced the Foundation to cancel the festival in December. Foundation president Paula Maita said both city staff and the Foundation agreed that eliminating vehicle traffic could reduce the risk of an accident. But council members will have the final say, she said.

"We are diligently working on it," Maita said. "It's very important to us to start [First Fridays] up again."

Residents and business owners can hear details of the plan at the next , Tuesday at 5:30 at the Grange Hall, 9125 Elk Grove Blvd.

Meanwhile, the Elk Grove Fine Arts Center will go ahead with its regular on Friday, featuring artwork from the and desserts from California Cakebites.
