City Will Build Bridge Over Highway 99 for Pedestrians and Bicycles

The city broke ground on the bridge Tuesday.

Bicyclists and pedestrians will soon have their own place to cross the freeway in Elk Grove.

The city broke ground Tuesday on a bridge that will cross Highway 99 and connect two trails that end along Elk Grove creek, near Laguna Springs and Emerald Vista drives.

The bridge, scheduled to be completed next spring, will eventually be about 1,300 feet long and 14 feet wide, the city said in a press release. The bridge will connect to a new 2,640-foot-long, 12-foot-wide paved trail along the creek.

The process will also include construction of drainage pipes, removing and building new sidewalks, repairing creek embankment, landscaping and a new freeway sign, according to the press release.

Officials say there will be “minimal freeway and frontage road closures” during construction.
