Cosumnes Oaks Mourns Passing of Freshman

Thomas Mutz, 14, died Wednesday night after being run over by a car near school.

Thomas Mutz, the Cosumnes Oaks High School freshman who while biking near school, has died, Principal Patrick McDougall confirmed Thursday morning.

"The doctors did everything possible to save our sweet, sweet boy but Tommy was just too broken," Michael Ashman, a relative, wrote on a Facebook page set up to support Mutz's recovery. Mutz passed away late Wednesday night, Ashman wrote.

Mutz's accident came during , which also saw the death of sophomore football player . The accident triggered an outpouring of support for Mutz's family, with over 100 people turning out Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil at the high school, hoping for his recovery.

McDougall said students were told of Mutz's passing just before lunch Thursday, and the school had grief counselors standing by.

No funeral arrangements have been announced, but a donation page to help Mutz's family was set up earlier this week.
