Elk Grove is One of the Fastest Growing Cities in California

Elk Grove's estimated population as of Jan. 1 of this year was 159,074.

The city added more than 3,000 new residents last year, making it the fourth fastest growing city with fewer than 300,000 people, based on numeric change.

The California Department of Finance on Wednesday estimated Elk Grove's current population at 159,074, up from 155,763 in 2012.

Elk Grove grew more than any other Sacramento County city last year: It grew by 2.1 percent, while Rancho Cordova grew by 1.4 percent and Sacramento grew by 0.7 percent.

Increasing growth was seen around the state, the department said.

"While still at historically low levels, California's statewide housing growth, as measured by net unit growth in 2012, was up 27 percent over last year, adding 45,309 housing units compared to the 2011 net increase of 35,638 units," the Department of Finance said in a press release.
