Elk Grove Gears Up for “May is Bike Month”
City offers free citywide bike map, hosts special events in Elk Grove

Elk Grove, CA — Whether headed to work, running errands or just looking for recreation, it’s time to dust off the bikes and join friends, neighbors and co-workers in the annual “May is Bike Month” program and mileage challenge.

Last night, the Elk Grove City Council proclaimed May 2013 as Bike Month, joining volunteers, public agencies, businesses, and bicycling enthusiasts from throughout the six-county Sacramento region in an effort to promote the benefits of bicycling.  In addition to the health benefits of bicycling, cyclists can pedal to beat gas prices, help reduce air pollution and enjoy the beautiful May weather.

In Elk Grove, bicyclists can refresh and recharge at the SACOG Energizer Station at Del Meyer Park on Laguna Creek Trail on Thursday, May 9 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.  The City of Elk Grove’s Trails Committee will participate at the charging station to pass out refreshments, giveaways, and the City of Elk Grove’s new citywide bike map, also available on the City of Elk Grove website.  Hard copies of the new bike maps are located at City Hall, the Elk Grove Library, Franklin Community Library and at Elk Grove bike shops.

A bike tour of the popular Franklin Creek Trail and Elk Grove Trail is planned for Tuesday, May 14.  Hosted by the Elk Grove Trails Committee, the 11-mile, family-friendly community bike ride will provide an opportunity for residents to share ideas and input with Trails Committee members.  Bicyclists are encouraged to meet at the corner of Whitelock Parkway and Big Horn Boulevard at 6 p.m.  For more information contact Sharon Anderson at 916-606-5012 or at sharona@citlink.net.

Elk Grove residents are encouraged to challenge their friends, family and co-workers to a mileage contest available at www.mayisbikemonth.com, hosted by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG).  The Elk Grove resident logging the most miles will be recognized by the Elk Grove City Council at a future Council meeting.
