Poll: Should School District Cap Amount Spent on Teachers' Health Benefits?

District wants cuts to close possible budget shortfall.

The Elk Grove Unified School District has faced serious budget uncertainty over the past few years, and teachers have been among the employees that have made concessions to help keep the district in the black.

Now, the district wants to set new limits on how much it will spend on teachers' health benefits, according to an article in today's Sacramento Bee.

District officials say they need to cap spending on health insurance premiums at $60 million to help avoid a potential $34 million budget shortfall next year.

Under the proposal, teachers would pay $40 per month for individual health coverage or $120 per month for family coverage starting next year, up from nothing under the current contract.

Teachers argue they've already taken furloughs and salary cuts in previous years, and that the district's plans are based on a worst-case scenario.
