Republican Challenges Scherman for Assembly Seat

Elk Grove City Councilmember Sophia Scherman now has at least two opponents in her race to represent the new 9th District.

Elk Grove City Councilmember Sophia Scherman faces new competition in her bid to win a state Assembly seat. Fellow Republican Tony Amador of Lodi has announced he will enter the race to represent the new 9th Assembly District, according to the Lodi News-Sentinel.

Amador, a retired U.S. Marshal and former Elk Grove resident, ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2010.

Assemblymember Richard Pan (D-Sacramento), who represents the current 5th District, is also seeking the seat in a district where Democrats hold an advantage among registered voters. Candidates from all parties will face off in the state’s open primary in June.

Scherman told Elk Grove Patch last week her campaign would focus on education, immigration and reducing regulations on business.

“Regulations are good but you can overdo them,” she said. “I want to keep more business in California.”
