YouTube Video of the Day: Garibaldi in Motion

Elk Grove performance painter David Garibaldi jumps, struts and oh yeah, paints.

So, Elk Grove Patch knew we had this semi-famous painter in Elk Grove named David Garibaldi. But we weren't prepared for the experience of watching him slash paint onto a canvas while simultaneously dancing around it to the music of a pop icon whose face then appears in the painting.

The technique, which we peeped for the first time on Youtube recently, is passionate, mesmerizing and easily accessible to young people and others outside the sometimes-snooty art world.

The portraits—of icons like Carlos Santana, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga—emerge gradually, leading to an 'aha' moment when the subject becomes clear. Garibaldi says he's inspired by Denny Dent, an Oakland native who made similar speedy paintings of rock stars before his death in 2004.

Garibaldi is a alum and former graffiti artist. You can read more about him in this Elk Grove Citizen article.

His 90-minute show, Garibaldi Live, debuted to a sold-out crowd in Sacramento last month and is now on tour in Iowa, of all places. Here's hoping he performs again in our neck of the woods soon—maybe even in Elk Grove?
