ENCINITAS, CA — The latest winning $1.2 million ticket, with five numbers, was sold in Encinitas, but was missing the Powerball number. Since no tickets were sold with all six numbers, the next estimated jackpot could swell to $1.9 billion, California Lottery Officials said Sunday.

The winning $1,120,390 ticket was sold at the Rite Aid at 4455 Manchester Ave.

Similarly, two other tickets bought in California last week also had five numbers and were missing the Powerball number. One was sold at a gas station in San Leandro, while the other sold at a supermarket in Susanville. Each are worth $1,120,390.

It was the 40th consecutive drawing without a grand prize winner, tying the record set in 2021. There have been no tickets sold with all six numbers since Aug. 3.

Last week's $1.2 billion Powerball jackpot lured thousands to convenience stores across the country.

This week's estimated $1.9 billion will bring the jackpot to a new record high. The drawing for that jackpot is Monday. Winners can choose to be paid annually for 29 years or choose a cash option.

Winners of lottery jackpots usually prefer a lump sum of cash, which for Monday’s drawing would be $929.1 million. The Powerball prize keeps getting more massive because of the inability of anyone to overcome the long odds of 1 in 292.2 million and win the jackpot. To take the top prize, players must match all five white balls and one red Powerball.

No one has won the prize since Aug. 3.

Eleven Powerball jackpots have been claimed in California since the game was launched in 1992. Indiana and Missouri have had the most jackpot winners, with 39 and 31, respectively.

The largest jackpot in state history was one in October of last year when $699.8 million Powerball ticket was sold to a man in Morro Bay while he bought his groceries.

A Powerball ticket costs $2. For an additional $1 per ticket, players can multiply non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times with the Power Play feature. One caveat: The 10X multiplier is only available when the advertised jackpot annuity is $150 million or less.

To win the jackpot, a player must match all white balls in any order and the red Powerball number. Lottery officials say chances when players don’t choose their own numbers. About 75 percent of winning tickets over the years were picked by a computer.

Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
