Encinitas Man Killed by Train After Drinking With a Friend, Examiner Says

A 51-year Encinitas man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Friday night after leaving a friend’s trailer where he was drinking, authorities said Saturday.

Douglas Gregory Burns was pronounced dead at the scene—1542 N. Coast Highway—as a result of multiple blunt force injuries, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

“The decedent was a single 51-year-old Caucasian male who resided alone in a trailer in Encinitas,” the office said Saturday.

“On the evening of 5/4/2012, the decedent left his friends trailer after consuming alcohol,” a statement said. “Approximately an hour later, the decedent was struck by an Amtrak train traveling [southbound].”

The time of death was 10:25 p.m. Friday—about 10 minutes after the injury was reported, the office said.

His relatives have been contacted, and the Medical Examiner’s Office said further studies were pending.
