Smashing Time: Solterra Winery’s First Grape Harvest

The grapes grown on a small family vineyard in Encinitas were processed at Solterra and will be aged for at least a year before becoming a wine on the menu.

Solterra Winery & Kitchen prides itself of using grapes from locally sourced vineyards—and appropriately, its first harvest Friday was about as local as it gets. The Syrah grapes in that batch were grown on a small family vineyard right here in Encinitas.

The grapes were processed on site using a machine that helps break down the tannin, and they’ll be aged at the winery for at least a year in predominately French oak barrels. After that, you’ll be able to find this local wine on the menu, along with dozens of other varieties made from grapes grown across the region.

To get a glimpse of Solterra’s operation, you can browse through the photo gallery and watch the video clip of the grapes being harvested.
