Three Drivers Arrested at Encinitas DUI Checkpoint

Sheriff's deputies also handed out 14 citations.

Three suspected drunk or drugged drivers were arrested overnight at a checkpoint in Encinitas, a sheriff's official reported.

In total 618 cars passed through the checkpoint which was set up from about 8 p.m. Friday to 1:20 a.m. today in the 1200 block of South Coast Highway, according to sheriff's Deputy Brenda Sipley.

Three people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, 14 drivers were cited for driver license violations and six cars were impounded, Sipley said.

The Encinitas Sheriff's Station conducted the checkpoint as part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign taking place this Labor Day weekend. 

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
