Encino Moms Respond to Tina Fey’s Essay in The New Yorker

Tina Fey, 40, has a lot to say about the taboo of being a working mother in Hollywood. The 30 Rock star and creator, who has a 5-year-old daughter, pokes fun at the double standards facing women in her piece in this week's The New Yorker. She spoke candidly about parenthood and raising her daughter as a working mother.

"It is less dangerous to draw a cartoon of Allah French-kissing Uncle Sam...than it is to speak honestly about [working moms]," she writes.

This week, the Encino Patch Moms Council wants to find out how local mothers reacted to Fey's piece.

If you’re like Fey—at or inching toward age 40 and the mother of one child—people probably ask you if you’re going to have more kids. The multi-Emmy-winning actress and comedian says that’s one of the “rudest questions someone can ask a woman.”

In addition to the working mother’s dilemma (Am I spending enough time with my child?) most people must also weigh the financial pressures of having more kids. That’s especially the case here in Encino where the cost of living is so high.

Fey goes on to explain that she’s totally angst-ridden about making this “baby versus work” decision. She describes her internal tug-of-war over whether she should have a second child as her career is hitting a high point and, rather inconveniently, her biological clock is ticking along at the same time.

“I debate the second-baby issue when I can’t sleep,” she writes. “Should I? No. I want to. I can’t. I must. Of course not. I should try immediately.”

What did you think of Tina Fey’s piece? How do you feel when people ask you “How do you juggle it all?” or “Are you going to have more kids?” What are the rudest questions you’ve been asked as a parent? How did you respond?
