Falling Tree Crashes Into Encino Bedroom, Killing 1

A large tree fell onto a two-story home in Encino Sunday night, killing a 60-year-old man.

ENCINO, CA — A large tree toppled onto a two-story home in Encino, killing a 60-year-old man Sunday night.

The man was in his bedroom when the tree crashed through the wall, according to Los Angele Fire Department Capt. Cody Weireter.

Three other people in the home on the 5000 block of North Odessa Avenue were able to escape uninjured, according to the fire department.

"Sadly, one person perished due to a tree falling into the two-story home. LAFD firefighters, heavy rescue, and urban search and rescue teams will continue working together to remove the tree," said Nicholas Prange, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 11 p.m. and worked with a search and rescue team to try to free the man who was trapped by the fallen tree. He died at the scene, however.

The teams continued to work to free the body for the coroner, Prange said. The Mayor's Crisis Response Team was responding to the incident at the house.

The victim was in the bedroom when the tree fell inside, Capt. Cody Weireter told reporters at the scene.
