Masonic Lodge Plans Golf Tournament
The event serves several purposes important to Freemasonry and the Lodge.

VAN NUYS -- Clarence F. Smith Daylight Lodge, No. 866, Free and Accepted Masons of California, has begun planning its Second Annual Golf Tournament presently scheduled for August 20, 2022. One might ask why.
There are good reasons: Not only will the event be fun and recreational, allowing for fellowship among its participants, it also supports the Masonic goals of philanthropy, family inclusion and public awareness.
As to fellowship, Masonry is well known for developing a sense of belonging as well as true friendships among its members.

As to philanthropy, a portion of the proceeds will go to supporting a Masonic youth group for young women that promotes leadership and character development, that is, the Van Nuys Chapter of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls.
For the Lodge's purposes, another portion of the proceeds will support the Lodge’s own projects and activities. (By way of example and not limitation, the Lodge supports public education by honoring local teachers and/or students during "Public Education Month" as proclaimed by the Grand Master of Masons in California. See, e.g., https://patch.com/california/e... . The Lodge also recently concluded a Children's Book Drive which benefited LAUSD's Homeless Education Program. See, https://patch.com/california/e... ).

As to family inclusion, this event will include an award ceremony and barbecue to which the tournament participants and the Lodge’s family members – spouses, children, grandchildren, etc. – will be included in the festivities. The membership of this Lodge consists of men who are as young as 19 and some who are seniors, and many in between. The average age of its members is about 50. It is also a very diverse group, not only by age, but also by religious and cultural background, family origin, education, experience, language, trades, professions, and so much more.
As to public awareness, people at the golf course obviously will know of the Lodge’s presence. Too, the larger community will know about Freemasonry and the Lodge through social media and even this article. In fact, “positive awareness” is a major theme of the Grand Lodge of California’s 2025 Strategic Plan. Masonry is not a secret society, although as a fraternity it has some secrets.
All these goals are important to Masonry generally and to this Lodge in particular, the latter because Clarence F. Smith Daylight Lodge is a relatively new Lodge with expectations of growth, good experiences, and a positive impact on the community as well as on its members.
One of Freemasonry’s traditions is that Lodge’s do not solicit members or ask men to join. Men must seek membership on their own initiative.
For those who are interested in knowing more about the fraternity and this Lodge, a review of the Lodge’s new website at http://clarencefsmith.org will reveal not only background and contact information, past activities and publications of the Lodge, but also more information specifically about the golf tournament, particularly if one is looking to participate on the golf course or by advertising/sponsoring the event.
