Fire Evacuates Senior Residence in Carmichael

Cause was improperly discarded hot or smoldering material into combustible garbage can.

Firefighters extinguished a blaze that struck two Carmichael homes on Thursday evening, including a senior residence, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District officials announced.

Sac Metro Fire responded to a reported structure fire at 6323 Perrin Way off of Barrett Road. Firefighters found a fire between two homes with the threat of extending into both.

Crews made a quick attack to prevent the spread of the fire while evacuating both homes. One home was the Golden Age Care Home residential care facility with five residents and fire crews assisted an elderly female resident from the
home, according to a Sac Metro Fire release.

Other occupants were alerted to the fire by neighbors and were able to evacuate
the homes.

The fire started in a plastic garbage can that was located between the homes and under the eaves of the residential care home, fire officials said. The fire's spread was limited to primary exterior damage of both homes with some extension into the attic of the care home.

No one was injured and the displaced residents of the care home were relocated to another facility, according to the SMF release.

Four engines, two truck companies, an ambulance and a battalion chief for a total of 22 firefighters responded to the fire.

The fire was contained within seven minutes and damage was estimated at $6,000, said Assistant Fire Chief Walt White. The cause was determined to be the result of improperly discarded hot or smoldering material into a combustible garbage can.

Sac Metro Fire officials say you should never discard hot or smoldering contents into a combustible trash receptor.
