Vehicle Smashes Through Hazel Ave. Businesses

A Ford SUV crashed into three Fair Oaks businesses in a strip mall.

An SUV smashed through three businesses in Fair Oaks Monday, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District reported.

Around 12:15 p.m., a Ford SUV smashed through the plate glass storefront of Designer Tailor, 5247 Hazel Ave. The vehicle turned and smashed through the wall of the tailor and traveled through a vacant storefront, coming to rest poking slightly into Rim's Deli, Rim's Deli co-owner David Prowbridge said.

"The sound was amazing," Prowbridge said. "All you heard was breaking glass."

He said the car pushed far enough into his deli to knock over a couple tables and some chairs, right in the middle of the lunch rush.

"We were very fortunate nobody got hurt," he said. "People just picked up their sandwiches and finished eating."

Prowbridge said after he heard the crash, he rushed outside–along with many of his customers–but didn't see anything except the broken glass of Designer Tailor's storefront.

"Out of my peripheral vision I noticed there was a car in there [in the vacant unit between his deli and the tailor]," he said.

He described the damage to the deli as more of a "nuisance" than anything serious, and said he's still open for business.

Meanwhile, the tailor that sustained the most damage is also open for the rest of the day.

"I can't close shop," owner Ando Margaryan said, noting many customers are coming in Monday to pick up their clothes.
