Flashing Pedestrian Signals to be Installed at Edgewater Boulevard & Port Royal Avenue

Installation is scheduled for week of August 11.

In an effort to enhance the safety of pedestrians, Foster City is adding traffic control devices called Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at crosswalks on Edgewater Boulevard at Port Royal Avenue (north).

RRFBs are user-actuated, amber LED lights that supplement warning signs at unsignalized intersections or mid-block crosswalks. They are activated by pedestrians manually with a push button. RRFBs use an irregular flash pattern that is similar to emergency flashers on police vehicles. They have been shown to significantly increase driver yielding at crosswalks when used along with standard pedestrian crossing warning signs and markings.

During the installation of the RRFBs, the City’s contractor will remove the existing crosswalk striping, paint new striping and install pedestrian activated RRFB systems at the two crosswalks. Installation of the devices is scheduled for the week of August 11, 2014.
