Foster City Asks Residents to Weigh in On Park Amenities

Open space, concession stands, mediation areas, nature trails or picnic areas -- what would you choose? Two new parks are on the drawing board in Foster City and officials want to hear what amenities residents hope they feature.

Both adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, these two city properties will be transformed into parks following two additional community meetings aimed at gaining insight into what components residents want in their new parks, according to Charlie Tomberg, member of the Park and Recreation Citizens Advisory Committee.

One parcel, known as Werder Park, a 2.6-acre property consisting of a picnic area, parking lot and restroom, is adjacent to the San Mateo County Werder Fishing Pier along the Foster City shoreline, just south of the existing San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.

The pier can be accessed by Foster City's Beach Park Boulevard. The other parcel, being tentatively referred to as Destination Park, is the wide piece of land between the Bay Trail pedway and Beach Park Boulevard near Halibut Street.

The Foster City Council has authorized Callandar and Associates to conduct a study on how to best use the site.

The first of three pubic meetings was held in early February and many in attendance expressed their desires of open space, nature trails and even concession stands.

Tomberg said that there was even a suggestion for an ice-skating rink or a safe haven for feral cats looked after by Project Bay Cat.

The next meeting on the proposed parks is scheduled for April 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 620 Foster City Blvd. and the final meeting is scheduled for Aug. 7.
