O.C. Motorist Killed In Fiery Crash On 605 Freeway

A passer-by attempted to pull the 24-year-old from the wreck near Carson Street. Any witnesses are asked to call CHP.

LONG BEACH, CA – A 24-year-old motorist died early Sunday morning in a fiery two-vehicle crash on the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in Long Beach, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash took place at 2:35 a.m. on the northbound 605 Freeway, just south of Carson Street, according to CHP Officer Alex Rubio. The motorist was driving a 2014 Toyota Corolla northbound when the car veered towards the shoulder and then across all lanes of traffic, Rubio said.

The vehicle then hit the concrete center divider and came to rest. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, the CHP reported.

A good Samaritan tried to pull the victim out of the car, according to the CHP.

The victim, identified as 24-year-old Angel Avila-Alvarez of Buena Park,was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

The crash initially closed the carpool and No. 1 lanes, according to the CHP. Later, all northbound lanes were temporarily closed so crews could extinguish the car fire and conduct accident and death investigations. All lanes were back open by 5 a.m.
